Carlton House at Christmas

Built in the mid 17th century, probably for a wealthy wool merchant, Carlton House enjoys a prominent position in Wotton's main street, directly on the Cotswold Way. Ideally situated for walkers.

Throughout its fascinating history it has undergone remodelling by various owners, in Georgian times a fine drawing room was added, containing excellent examples of 'shell alcoves', and it retains its original Jacobean 'dog leg' staircase, which runs through all three storeys. Both of these features are mentioned in the Pevsner Architectural Guide - Gloucestershire 1: The Cotswolds.

In later periods a Victorian extension was added for staff quarters, which is now available as a self catering alternative or holiday let for guests.

The house has a fascinating 20th century history, during which time it has been: a post office, a telephone exchange, and an American Air Force headquarters during the second world war. More recently it has been used as overspill classrooms for Katharine Lady Berkeley Grammar School, after which it was used for commercial purposes, including a printers, photographers, picture framers, and dentists!

We have a large secure car park at the rear of the building.

Extensive refurbishment over the past two and a half years has uncovered two large inglenook fireplaces and other architectural features previously hidden. We have kept all these unique original features and sympathetically introduced the modern conveniences of the 21st century. It is now back to its original roots as a large domestic dwelling.

Family run, Carlton House welcomes guests who share an interest in historic buildings.
